Working in clay seems intuitive to me and I get lost in the process of forming and smoothing. I am fascinated by the diversity of surfaces and forms one can create. I look to African ceramics and nature as sources for my inspiration. The spines and defenses of sea urchins and seedpods particularly intrigue me.

Most of my pieces are wheel thrown and altered. Once I have altered the form to make it more organic, I extrude the spines onto the clay surface. I enjoy the texture of the spines and the way they break up the space around the piece. I create my pieces as lidded forms so the viewer is forced to consider how to handle and navigate the spine covered surface in order to open the vessel.
